Preparation for canning: how and what to wash vegetables-fruits-berries-greens, where we will dry)

It's time to preserve vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs.
And the question arises of how and in what way our raw materials can be washed for conservation, so that it is quick, simple, without injuring the raw materials, to preserve its appearance.

I will share my many years of experience.

1. For washing and drying vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs, I use "Carousel for drying herbs".
I wash almost all the raw materials for conservation in it, including dry land in it. As a rule, such a procedure is enough to rinse the raw material from dirt, dust, twigs, sand in several hot (or cool water, as appropriate).
Then I dry the raw materials in the carousel too. But, the speed and number of rotations of the carousel will depend on the raw material itself - whether it is a strong strawberry, or a fragile blueberry.

For example, I recently processed strawberries:

Strawberries before washing

Strawberries after washing and drying in a carousel

And of course, the container for washing raw materials should be large, capacious, so that the raw materials move freely along it during washing, which will provide much better washing.

2. But, there are options when, after the carousel, the raw material is not completely rid of water and needs to be dried.
Or you just need to do without the carousel and air dry the washed raw materials.
Then I have such moisture wicking mats, different sizes and different colors.

For comparison, I show such rugs, one is still "white" and relatively clean, the second "filthy" with berry juice of black currant, blueberries and other actively coloring berries. Such rugs absorb water from raw materials very well, then you have to squeeze them out.

These rugs are perfect for hand and machine wash. Rugs have served me for many, many years, and retain their properties completely.

I use rugs all the time, for example, washed and dried greens in the carousel, you must first dry them a little before putting them in a container and putting them in the refrigerator - then the greens will not spoil in it.

Since I often use rugs, I had to find a permanent storage place in the kitchen, so that "both at hand and out of the way." Found such a place. I attached a clothespin to the center of the rugs, and I hang them on the cabinet door, from the inside.

The closet is closed, nothing is visible, but the rugs are always at hand - just reach out

3. Colanders-sieve on pallets.

It is very convenient to wash berries-fruits-greens in such a sieve. Due to the deep bowl-stand, water is constantly in the colander, which allows you to fully wash the raw materials, and at the right time, remove the colander itself and let the water drain. And then put the raw materials to dry on the rug.

The kit has a "lock" that allows you to fix the structure in the desired position.

It is convenient to put vegetables and fruits in such a colander after washing in a bowl so that the water can drain freely.

For example, I put tomatoes here, sweet peppers after processing and peeling, onions - when I prepare raw materials for boiling caviar for the winter While I cut one portion of vegetables, the second dries up from water

Admin, of course, the carousel rules! But I have it a small and absorbent napkin not so long ago, so during harvesting, if there are a lot of berries, I use a large basin and terry towels - a time-tested classic!

I also use a large basin for washing and a linen homespun cloth (even my grandmother weaved herself), and for drying it is very good to put it in an electric dryer for a couple of minutes.

Tanya, where is the engine with the fan in your electric dryer? I have a wet dripping berry from below, somehow dumb, but if it floods? Or on your side?
NataliaVoronezh
And now I wash and dry in the carousel, and I also adapted the cat litter (absolutely not tested by cats), in the same place, the grill also helps a lot.
filirina
Wow! Natasha, you’re an innovator! Cat litter is cool! Where's the cat? Or did you take it as a berry specialist?

Take a close look at the location of the fan (below) and the holes in the trays - they match! This means that the water will not just get on the fan, unless the special is poured onto it.

I have two dryers with a fan at the bottom (Isidri and Orson) and no problems with water getting into the fan have been observed to work properly and for many years. Sometimes the juice drips, but falls on the pallet below - but not on the fan

somehow dumb there dripping wet berries

If with dripping water, then the berry will dry indefinitely, and actively drip down
For this, special tools are needed, such as a carousel, rugs, etc., in order to first remove a lot of water from the berries, and only then can you dry it in a dryer

filirina, Irina, from below, but I immediately put on a linen cloth or towel, all the water goes away and then I wind it a little in the electric dryer and into the freezer.

Tatyana, and what kind of hooks on the doors? Good idea .. and not just for the rug

Tanyusha, and some special rugs? Or did you just pick the right ones from the available ones?
Thank you for the idea of drying berries in a carousel. Itself did not think of something. Yesterday my strawberries were drying for my pie. How much would it dry? That's it ... And then I put it in the carousel and freed it from moisture in seconds. Miracle!

Tanya, how many liters do you have a carousel?

the cats have their own toilets, I took this one for the cat, but it turned out to be too small in size (I just put it next to it and compared it) I bought a bigger one for the cat, and I adapted this one for drying. He helped me out very well when I made Romina sun-dried tomatoes, the syrup flowed remarkably through the wire rack into the tray.

Tanya, are there any special rugs? Or did you just pick the right ones from the available ones?

Luda, special rugs. I don't even remember what they are called, but they are designed specifically for drying glass devices and other things. Such rugs can be freely bought in household goods stores (where different napkins and rags), and can be ordered on ozone. And I'm greedy, as I see them, I will definitely buy
It is advisable to buy a larger and thicker one, so that the drying area is large, and fruits-berries should be laid out in 1-2 rows if possible - they will absorb water faster

I bought similar rugs in a fixed-price list.

Tanya, how many liters do you have a carousel?

Gulya, I went and looked - on the bottom there is a mark of 5 liters enough for washing

And I will add, from my practice of using drying, the cover of the turntable turned out to be more practical, manually turn the handle to rotate the basket
I didn't like the lace
