  • Potatoes are very popular in Germany. They love him because you can cook a lot of dishes from him. For example, fried potatoes, boiled potatoes, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, potato gratin and others.
  • Looking at the “multicolored” potato dishes in Germany, it’s hard to believe that a couple of hundred years ago, an unprecedented advertising campaign had to be launched in a European country that was not “well-fed” at that time. And the initiator of the campaign was the King of Prussia Friedrich the Great (Friedrich der Große, 1712 - 1786).
  • They tried to praise the nondescript overseas plant in every way: pretty flowers adorned the busts and hairstyles of local fashionistas, in honor of the potato, or, as it was formerly called, "tartuffle" (from the German Tartuffel), dinner parties were held. "What the peasant does not know, he does not even want to know," - they like to say in Germany. And after the first daredevils were poisoned by the fruits of an outlandish plant - and even more so!
  • I had to go for tricks. Here, for example, is one of Frederick the Great's "advertising moves": the harvested potato tubers were ordered to guard the soldiers, thus creating the image of a forbidden fruit for this fruit. And the forbidden fruit, as you know, is sweet. The action attracted the attention of the inhabitants of Prussia, after which they somewhat changed their attitude towards potatoes.
  • However, as they say, there would be no happiness, but misfortune helped. In the years of poor harvest and hunger, the people thought and ... moved from tops to the roots. Tubers tasted and loved. "They loved it so much that until recently the Germans were considered the biggest potato eaters in Europe," says culinary folklore expert Petra Foede.
  • So from the tsarist table potatoes got into the peasant hut, becoming the food of the poor. In each place of the country, the vegetable has received its own nickname and a special cooking option. "Earthen apples" (Erdäpfel) or "Earthen berries" (Grundbeeren), as potatoes are often called to this day, are the basis of the popular potato salad in Germany. In each region, chefs prepare it in their own way. The Swabians - with finely chopped onions, vinegar and vegetable oil. Bavarians fry onions with speck, and salad dressing with a sauce of meat broth, mustard, vegetable oil, vinegar, salt, sugar and pepper. Lightly salted herring is added to the Hamburg salad and seasoned with mayonnaise. In Brandenburg, you can't do without pickles and dill.
