So the time has come to open with us the topic of cakes on discs.

I am very glad that I was given such an honorable mission!
Fake, polystyrene cakes, dummy is all about them, cakes that you can work on for a long time, showing skill, without worrying about the cake going bad.
Here are some examples of my work, if you have any questions, I will be happy to answer

Fake cakes, or beauty cakes. Fake cakes, or beauty cakes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS :
Irina Dolars
prascovia, and what are these blanks? How to choose them?
After all, there are different purposes and, accordingly, qualities

Found this:

Fake cakes, or beauty cakes. Fake cakes, or beauty cakes.

Cheaper will be worse?
prascovia
Ira! Polystyrene can be of different quality, but it is not always possible to choose, therefore, if the disc is completely "spongy", then it can be covered with mastic twice, then the tier will be smoother, without depressions.
Husky
prascovia, Alena, but you can't tell me how to properly cover such blanks with mastic.
Well, you can't put mastic on a blank, it will disappear.
And if the blanks are uneven, are they somehow aligned?
Irina Dolars
And here it is advised to align with glue:
There are 2 types of foam concrete - one for living flowers, the other for non-living flowers.
It is precisely the second one that is good for cakes - it is more durable and elastic, does not crumble, practically leaves no crumbs. It is very easy to form anything from it.
Can be covered with ordinary PVA on top - fixes tightly.

Alena, how do you look at this? You also somehow mentioned the putty
prascovia
Lyudochka! It is enough to moisten the polystyrene itself with just water, but at the expense of the glue, I doubt that if the mastic does not lie down the first time, or it breaks, then you can remove and mix, but with glue it will probably be problematic, because it can change the structure of the mastic. And I will say that I don’t throw away the old blanks, I drag them over again, soak them from the dried mastic in a basin of water, and everything goes away. Where there were holes from the bouquets, I just fill in the mastic and cover it with mastic again.
Ira, yes, she tried to putty with ordinary building putty, but naturalness did not work out and returned to mastic.
Husky
Flax, that is, you want to say that you wiped the blanks with wet hands and wrap them with mastic right on the wet surface? And nothing else is needed down?

I tried and putty with ordinary construction putty, but naturalness did not work out and returned to mastic.

I understood correctly that if you plaster the blanks, then you don't need to cover with mastic? Does plaster replace mastic?
prascovia
People! I do this, smooth it - I rub the upper edge of the disc with fine sandpaper, moisten it, cover it with mastic, then turn the disc over and once again I leak well, along the very edge, so that the mastic would adhere well everywhere. And I experimented with putty, I thought that it could replace mastic, but, as I said, I did not achieve naturalness
IRY
And I covered the blank with icing and mastic on it. But not the best option. I needed icing rather for alignment))
I also covered the blank with the cheapest oil and I liked it))
prascovia
IRI!
If the cake is needed for an exhibition, or for decorating a showcase in a pastry shop, where it will stand for a long time and without a refrigerator, the butter can ruin the coating.
IRY
prascovia, then icing ... Meey has a blank in the garage for 2 years already)) and mastic on it))
prascovia
Aisng, very good! But it's easier for me to cover it a second time with mastic if I need a perfect surface.

I also want to be able to make such cakes

prascovia, Thanks for the science !!!! They asked me to make a cake model. Used your method. I just sprinkled the blanks with water. They were foam plastic with small dents. which were completely invisible after covering. The mastic stuck like a pretty one. She rolled out mm3 as usual. If there were deep dents. then I covered them with mastic first. Thanks again!Fake cakes, or beauty cakes.
prascovia
valentine52, I am very glad that my advice was useful!

Girls, tell me how to cover false tiers with mastic, only this is not an additional tier to the cake, but a completely fake cake for the exhibition and then it will stand on the shop window

Chinchila, I can tell you my experience .. I made round boxes out of thick cardboard, covered it with cling film so that the cardboard would not get wet and did not lose its shape. smeared with a sooo-thin layer of oil. The mastic stuck and froze at once, and then dried up)).
This layout has withstood more than one week))

Does anyone use / have used Styrofoam blanks for cake dummies? How to properly cover it with mastic? Do I need to grease with ganache first? I watched the video, they just cover it naked. But won't there be irregularities? And it seems to me that the mastic will not stick to the styrofoam. Lubricate with water? But, again, if you lubricate with water and cover with ganache, then this blank immediately becomes disposable. That is, you cannot remove one mastic and cover with another. Or am I mistaken?
Nadi
yalexandrina, slightly moisten with some water and cover with mastic.
Reuse is possible, just put this dummy cake under warm water, the mastic will move away from the blank.
yalexandrina
Nadi, oh, thank you !!! Will the pig get wet from the water?
Nadi
yalexandrina, no, it won't get wet
yalexandrina
Girls, save me. Can a blank be wrapped and decorated a month before the cake? I was so happy, I thought that I would prepare a lot of things. And today it dawned on me that the mastic is likely to dry out on the blank. More and cracks will go from a long road. It's on the cake that the cream doesn't dry out, but on the disc ... Bliiin. Milk mastic.

Sanya, fit the MM blank. It dries for a very long time and does not lose much elasticity. And if you add a little more glycerin to it, I think it will not dry out. However, glycerin can also be added to the milk, it retains moisture.
I once mixed up the bottles and added glycerin instead of glucose to the flower, it didn't dry out ...

Dance, Tan, where can I find this glycerin with us? Or maybe at least a week in advance? Well, or a couple of days before departure? So it probably won't dry out too much?

Quote: Nansy

yalexandrina, I have a blank covered with more than a year already lying around, nothing cracked, but I don't remember what kind of mastic I covered

Nansy, oh, Natasha, thanks! Doesn't it look dry? How freshly covered? If only you would remember the mastic

Quote: Dance

Sash, as I understand it, the blank is styrofoam, just a decor? Buy pharmacy glycerin at the pharmacy, it has the same effect.

Quote: Nansy

yalexandrina, in appearance, of course, not as freshly wrapped, it is clear that it is dry, straight matte-matte. Mastic judging by the color is just the same milk. You add glycerin after all, I think it won't hurt. Or do it in a week and store it in the refrigerator, it won't dry up there

Quote: Mom Tanya

yalexandrina, I have a layout from the icing courses covered with a top product. As good as new! Second year!

Thank you, Natasha. Probably, then I'll do it before leaving. Do you need to lubricate the disc with something? I watched the video, but it is different there. Someone immediately tightens, and someone first lubricates with cooking fat.

Mom Tanya, wow! Maybe because the mastic is purchased? I have something homemade.

Girls, the milk can withstand, but in the cold, there is a dairy product in the composition, although it is not eaten from a blank ... and the marmyshka one will definitely stand. Verified. I have several parts (the small ones did not see and did not gobble up) lying around in the box for probably half a year ... And so that it does not become dull when it dries, maybe butter or fat kulin. add to create a wet effect?

Tan, I thought if it dries up too much, then I will go through with a brush with cooking oil. In general, I think, in the windows there are blanks covered with mastic, and nothing. The view is normal. Okay, I'll see. Maybe I'll dare to experiment. So I'll find out.

yalexandrina, Look at this threadhttps://Mcooker-enn.tomathouse.com/index.php@option=com_smf&topic=390584.0The blank just needs to be sprinkled with water
Dance
Sashun, I made a cake yesterday, and added 2 plums to the MM spoons. oils. Pieces of mastic remained on the plate for 2 days - they did not dry out, the same wet and glossy, that is, there is no dullness. But this is current for 2 days ...
yalexandrina
Dance, Tan, thank you! But this is really only 2 days. I think I will dare to experiment. I have no choice. Cake for January 2. In addition to the cake, there is a lot more. Plus a cake on NG. Everything for the family, so you can experiment
Dana990
girls, do you buy ready-made blanks or do you yourself? What is better if you use homemade ones?
Dana990
Thank you very much, I will try
ledi
Girls, do I need to stick skewers into the dummy if there is a 5-6 kg cake on top of it?
Larissa u
ledi, it is not necessary, it is dense
Irina Dolars
Vera, you're not strengthening the dummy, but the cake itself.
If you stick a common rod into the upper tiers, drive it deeper into the blank.
ledi
Thank you girls! Yes, I thought so to insert the rod, otherwise suddenly the substrate will go with the cake
Dita
Hello everyone) The question is, how to evaluate these fake cakes?
I recently had a situation where I was making a big, big tiered fake cake. 80 cm high. I didn’t know how to count them, and there was too little time to search for information, so I counted by tiers (I looked at the cost price in italics, * 2 and 2,3). But in fact, the mastic went there a lot (the tiers are square, the side of the square is 60,40,35, etc., height 15), a lot of different decor (although I also tried to put anything inedible inside the decor), but still. In general, I was puzzled, what do you think? And if there is a cascade of flowers? Please share your experience)
pssaha
Dita, Olya, I counted all-all the costs of materials and products, multiplied by 3 .. this is for assembly .. you count flower figurines like on an ordinary cake .. no matter that they are not edible ... here is the biggest pay for labor ..
Dita
Quote: pssaha
all-all costs for materials and products,
Tatiana, thank you!
But how do you calculate in advance how much mastic will go, for example, for the decor? I couldn't predict this in advance (But I will keep the system in mind for the future))
pssaha
Dita, Olya, of course, you can't count it exactly .. but you add up)) and, of course, count more for the complexity of the decor))
mIRCa
and I will show my dummy. ordered for the day of open doors to a food college-type there so they teach
the discs were very uneven, they were also very crumpled during shipment, which is a minus to the big seller. But the decor-gel under the mastic hid the small irregularities of the foam plastic .. although the large dents did not disappear, I masked it as best I could :(
Fake cakes, or beauty cakes.
I consider the cost of materials, estimate how long it will take to make flowers, cover the tiers and think how much I want to earn during this time. plus the cost ..
