Ingredients

White bread

Cooking method

  • Cut the bread into pieces no thinner than 1 cm (thinner will become sour), cut off the crust.
  • Break eggs into a bowl, add cream, salt, sugar, beat everything with a broom into the egg mass. We put the bread in the mixture and gently stir so that the bread is covered with the mixture on all sides and soaked in it, turn it over several times. It is not necessary to keep in the mixture for a long time, so that the bread does not turn into mush and turn into porridge.
  • During this time, we warm up the pan, melt the butter on it, and slowly, carefully, with a fork, shift the pieces of bread to the hot pan. While dragging, hold each piece over a bowl to drain off excess liquid.
  • Fry until golden brown the laid pieces of bread on one side only. Then we turn it over to the other side, on top of each piece we spread a little jam, or berries from it (like my apricot from jam), and fill it with the remaining egg mixture. Lift each piece of bread to allow the mixture to penetrate under the bread.
  • Close the lid and let the bread and mixture bake.
  • Look what an airy casserole turns out!

Why such a name? We prepare this breakfast-dessert very often from generation to generation, and when the question arises of what to cook for breakfast, the answer sounds like "bread with an egg". Sometimes this dish goes on its own, sometimes as an addition to breakfast for dessert.

And I cook this dish usually salty: before laying the bread, I fry a small amount of brisket, and in the bread I cut out the very middle and the brisket there, and towards the end I spread tomatoes, cut into circles, herbs and grated cheese on top of the eggs.
