Tips for growing gooseberries, raspberries and blackberries

gooseberry raspberry blackberryThe gooseberry prefers nutritious black earth or well-fertilized clay soil, sufficiently moist and sunny position. On light and dry soils, large-fruited English gooseberry varieties are completely unsuccessful, and here you can only breed small-fruited gooseberries, which do not have industrial value (suitable for winemaking). The gooseberry is more sensitive to frost and sometimes suffers in severe winters, especially on damp, swampy soils.

Raspberry

Any soil is suitable for breeding raspberries, and it should be sufficiently moist, but not wet. Raspberries, which bear fruit once (simple), put up with any location, both with sunlit and shaded - under not very overgrown trees: raspberries that bring several harvests in summer (remontant) must be planted exclusively in the sun.

Raspberries are left in one place for 10-12 years; after this period, the berries become smaller. In view of such a long period, it is necessary to thoroughly cultivate and fertilize the land allocated for the raspberry plantation. Processing begins in spring with deep plowing; in summer, when re-plowing with a soil deepener, it is necessary to apply manure in an amount of at least 8 kg per 2 sq. m. If complete processing is impossible, prepare a pit for each bush, measuring 70x70 cm, 50 cm deep. During planting, put in each pit 8 kg of rotted manure. Raspberries are planted in rows of 1.5 m and 1 m in rows.

Plantation care - loosening soil between rows, pruning bushes and fertilizing. Loosening is carried out as the soil is overgrown between the rows of weeds. Loosening should not be deep, without damaging the roots, since damaged roots give a large number of offspring. Loosening is done with glanders. When pruning, it must be borne in mind that annual shoots do not bear fruit - they remain herbaceous: in the second year the shoots bear fruit and die off. Therefore, in the fall, all the shoots that have borne fruit are cut out, and no more than 5-6 shoots are left from the young, while in the spring these shoots are cut to 1/3 of the length. From the third to the fourth year, the plantation must be fertilized, applied as a surface fertilizer in the summer, and in the fall it is buried. The burial is carried out between the rows, stepping back from the bush by 35 cm. All appearing offspring should be immediately removed.

Raspberries are propagated by means of strong root suckers, which are left on the plantation. The transplant must be done in the fall, and not in the spring, since the raspberry bushes start growing early. In severe winters, raspberries must be bent to the ground and strengthened with pegs - then the snow will cover it, and it will not suffer from frost.

With proper care, the raspberry plantation already in the second year yields a harvest at the rate of 5-6 kg of berries from a remontant bush and 4-5 kg from a simple raspberry bush. When shipping berries, they must be removed to full maturity.

Blackberry

When planting a blackberry plantation, you must adhere to the rules for raspberries, but keep in mind that blackberries love a location in the sun. Offsprings of her, appearing in large numbers, must be removed immediately.
