CherriesThe opinion about cherries is not always flattering: "A bone in a bag with sweet water." And it is true, no acid in it, no real sweetness. There is only freshness. And another trump card - it ripens early. Before cherries, apples, pears, watermelons and, of course, grapes.

It would be better to breed more. Profitable! In fact, the area under cherries on the planet is falling from year to year. Starlings are to blame. In Europe, cherry growers are not as afraid of insects as starlings. They will not so much collect as spoil, tasting the berries, whether they are ripe or not. There was only one country where there were no starlings - New Zealand. And she could freely become a great cherry power. Alas, without thinking properly, the New Zealanders brought in starlings. What this led to was very vividly described by Professor S. Pieniek.

While in New Zealand, the professor mentioned birdhouses in a conversation with a gardener. “With all the delicacy, he looked at me as if I was insane ...“ To starlings, and even to create convenience? Yes, they must be outlawed! " - so it was necessary to understand his look.

It turned out that a few years ago, the starlings forced him to fork out pretty much. I had to put the cherry orchard in a giant cage. Two hectares were covered with wire mesh on the sides and top. Only then were the cherries found to be relatively safe. In Australia, about the same thing. Without a net, not a single fruit can be preserved on the tree.

The Europeans apparently couldn't afford wire nets. And the cherry nurseries that supplied planting material to gardeners fell into disrepair. Saplings almost did not buy. The starlings dominated the gardens. And then it occurred to someone to use Japanese nylon fishing nets. They are much cheaper than metal and more convenient. Others bought Norwegian cotton. The gardens were hidden under the nets. For the first time in many years, cherry nurseries also came to life and could again sell their products. Apparently, it is not for nothing that the Latin name for sweet cherry is bird cherry!

However, even with cheap nylon nets, protecting gardens is expensive. For the first time, fishing nets were used in Denmark in 1966, and two years later, a network with a width of one hundred meters and a length of ... five kilometers was required. She closed a garden of fifty hectares. To make cherries cheaper, they tried their luck in electronics. They caught young birds, shaking their legs. The tape recorder recorded heart-rending screams. Then they played in the presence of starlings. Alas, the fear lasted only two years. Then we got used to it. Gardeners used a different technique - firing blank cartridges. And here the respite did not exceed two years.

Somewhat better effect on feathered stuffed black cats. Scary feline silhouettes were placed between the trees. In the end, the starlings saw through this variant of fear. So, while the networks are active ...

Another difficult problem is the germination of cherry seeds. Cherry is a forest child. Its bones in the forest fall on the damp litter and germinate there in warmth and dampness. If they dry up, they will die and do not germinate. Academician P. Zhukovsky, not knowing this, collected a large stock of cherry pits in Corsica. He was tempted by the large-fruited variety he encountered. I decided to bring it to Leningrad to replenish the living collection of the VIR (All-Union Institute of Plant Industry). He dried the seeds well, so that they would not grow moldy and rot along the way, as all seeds usually dry. Alas, when they began to germinate, the seedlings did not appear. The dried bones turned out to be dead.
