LG HB-156 JE bread machine test

Mcooker: best recipes LG bread makers

It's finished! At last I got the opportunity to try out an automatic bakery! LG entrusted me to test one of their new products, a bread maker HB-156 JE. This was my first experience with such a device, before that I saw them only from afar. The dimensions of the stove taken out of the box pleasantly surprised me. I imagined this miracle of technology a little more, not so compact. True LG HB-156 JE is not the largest bread maker, it is designed for a family of 3-4 people. The maximum weight of a baked loaf is 680 grams. An ordinary store bun weighs about the same. Most bakeries of rival firms bake more impressive breads.

Stove LG HB-156 JE is white, quite neat in appearance. It is extended in depth, which means that it does not require too much space for its installation. You can install anywhere, just not next to the stove or some other sources of heat. Also, do not place it on a windowsill or in a draft. This can either speed up or drastically slow down the yeast, making baking results unpredictable.
The cord for the device is not long, about a meter. This somewhat complicates the installation of the device. You will either have to look for a place near the outlet, or use extension cords. But manufacturers believe that the meter is the optimal length of the cord: it does not dangle anywhere, it is rather difficult to get tangled in it. And sockets in a modern kitchen have long been located in those places where it is customary to install household appliances.

Removing the lid, I found inside the bakery what I should have found there: a non-stick mold and circular shade. The form is equipped with a handle for which it is convenient to pull it out. At the bottom of the mold is a small rotating dough mixer for kneading dough. The nozzle can be easily removed from the transmission shaft. The cover folds back easily and locks securely in an upright position.

The bread maker comes with a measuring plastic cup for flour and liquids. Its volume is 230 ml. The walls of the cup are transparent, they have convenient marks on them, which make it possible to measure any required volume of liquid in any unit. Also included is a double-sided measuring spoon. One side of it corresponds to the volume of a standard tablespoon (15 ml), and the other - a teaspoon (5 ml). But, as it turned out later, some recipes include "half a tablespoon of sugar" or "a quarter of a teaspoon of yeast." The spoons are made of opaque plastic and it is difficult to measure half of them.

The box also contained a fairly detailed, clearly written instruction and a collection of bread recipes.

Bread

Almost all recipes contain the same ingredients. These are flour, sugar, milk powder, salt, dry yeast and water. I didn't have milk powder, I had to go to the store for it. I also bought some fresh dry yeast bags.

I embarked on the sacred rite with some trepidation: bread always seemed to me a mystical product, full of mystery and sacred meaning. This is the meaning I had to comprehend. I decided to start with the most ordinary, table white bread, with a large loaf.

I took out the form, wiped it with a damp cloth, as the manufacturer advises. It is not recommended to wash the mold under running water, this can damage the transmission mechanism. I put on the shaft, or "spindle", as the manufacturer lovingly calls it, a spatula for kneading dough. Prepared products: flour, sugar, salt, yeast, milk powder, butter. As indicated in the instructions, I first poured water into the mold, 1 cup and a third of a cup. Then she poured flour, salt, sugar, milk powder. Before adding the flour, the cup had to be wiped dry. This is not very convenient; it would be advisable to complete the bread maker with two cups. They are inexpensive, and the time savings are significant.

The recipe required two tablespoons of butter. But the cold butter stuck to the spoon and was difficult to scrape off. It occurred to me that it would be easier not to measure butter with spoons, but to weigh it out on an accurate kitchen scale. I did just that with the second spoon. It turned out 12 grams. In all the following tests, I have already measured the oil on the scales.

After all the products were loaded into the mold, I put the mold in place, inside the oven, plugged in the oven and set the program.

The program is very easy to install. The bread recipe indicated that it should be baked in the "basic" mode. This mode is set by pressing the "MENU" button twice. Then I chose the color of the crust - light and set it by double pressing the button "COLOR OF THE CROWN". After that, she pressed the "START" button. The cooking time was displayed on the screen - 3.40 and the bread maker started working.

You cannot open the lid during operation - the temperature regime necessary for the proper growth of yeast may be violated - this was stated in the instructions. And the window by the stove is not too big and you can see not everything you want through it. But I could not stand it and still opened the lid to see how the device works and to photograph the process.

A neat ball of almost finished dough rolled inside, slightly larger than a man's fist. The machine stopped and a lump of dough fell to the bottom. I closed the lid to let the dough fit comfortably. During the rise of the dough, the machine was turned on a couple of times for several minutes to knead the dough. About three hours later there was a slight crackle and the smell of a bakery. The bread maker started the most crucial moment - baking bread. The dough rose and took up about two-thirds of the mold's volume. Now the dough could already be easily seen through the transparent window. The bread was baked for 50 minutes, then it cooled down for 20 minutes, as it was laid down in the cooking program.

After the beep, I eagerly opened the lid, took out the mold, and shook the ruddy loaf out of it onto a napkin. I kept the uniform in special mittens for hot dishes so as not to burn myself. The bread is not very high, the top crust is slightly cracked at the very beginning of baking.

The instructions describe in detail all possible types of defects that occur when making bread in the LG bread maker. Several error options were offered to choose from: a lot of flour, old yeast or little yeast, little sugar, or too little water. The yeast was fresh, I put sugar and water strictly according to the instructions. I probably somewhere was wrong. After reading the instructions again, I realized that the flour had to be put in a measuring cup without tamping. I pressed her pretty hard.

The probable cause of the error has been found. But the loaf was so appetizing in appearance that I never for a moment doubted its quality. Before cutting the loaf, I examined it from all sides. I noticed that the mixer was baked into a loaf. But in the instructions it was written that this was provided for by the design, sometimes it happens and is not a defect in the device. Deciding not to worry about this, I carefully pulled it out with a small plastic spatula.

I started cutting the bread. First, I cut the loaf in half, then began to cut off pieces, about 15 mm wide. First with a knife and then with a slicer. The bread was cut well, did not crumble, did not crumble or break.I did not dare to cut off a thinner piece - soft fresh bread is not intended for this.

And then the most terrible thing began: my hungry family, which had been watching and sniffing for a long time at what was happening in the kitchen, surrounded the plate and stretched out their suffering hands to it. I put the kettle on, but in vain. Exactly 5 minutes later, the plate was empty. Nobody waited for tea, including me, eating a piece while standing. Usually our family of three eats a loaf of bread a week. From the hungry eyes of my husband and son, I realized that I urgently needed to bake the next portion.

Kulich

The manufacturer of the bread maker, LG, is very proud of the “Russian Cook” baking program, which is included in this model. This program is specially designed for baking bread according to traditional Russian recipes. You can bake rye bread, honey-mustard bread and even Easter cake. It was the promise of a real Easter cake that caused my disbelief. Despite the fact that Easter is still far away, I decided to bake it as an experiment.

The recipe for Easter cake is the most complicated, the dough is kneaded on dough, the food is placed in the bowl in two stages. After looking at the instructions again, after reading the recipe and comments, I began to cook products. I poured 50 ml. water, broke 4 eggs, added 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 cups of flour and 2 teaspoons of yeast. I didn’t measure the butter in cups, but carefully weighed 72 grams (6 tablespoons). Using the “MENU” button I chose the “Russian Chef” program, with the baking control button I chose a light crust. The recipe recommended that you choose medium, but the dough with a lot of baking and sugar browns pretty quickly. I pressed the START button, the kneading mechanism started working.

While the dough was kneading, I prepared all the other ingredients as recommended in the recipe: 1 cup flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, half a teaspoon yeast. The recipe recommends adding half a cup of raisins, but since my family doesn't like raisins, I decided not to put them in.

After 15 minutes, after a fairly loud "beep", I added all the ingredients to the dough one by one. The stove spun again. This time, I was no longer curious and did not open the lid. The bread maker worked great in automatic mode, without my participation. About half an hour before the end of the program, I thought about the icing for the cake. The recipe book gave a fairly simple and rather traditional recipe for icing: take 200 grams of powdered sugar, sift through a sieve into a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of hot milk and rub with a wooden spoon until smooth and shiny. The finished glaze had to be poured over the cooled Kulich and decorated with multi-colored millet.

This "multi-colored millet" breathed with such a serenity, such homespun, that I laughed. By the decision of the family council, millet was canceled. After a little thought, I also canceled the frosting. Still, Kulich is a festive Easter dish. And I cooked it in test mode.

In 3 hours 40 minutes after the start, the already familiar "beep" sounded and "END" was displayed on the screen. I opened the lid. The cake rose splendidly, much better than the loaf of bread I baked earlier.

Kulich rose magnificently

Despite the fact that the "RUSSIAN COOK" mode includes cooling down time, the Kulich was still hot. It was impossible even to touch the handle of the form. I had to use mittens again. I shook the cake out of the mold, pulled the kneading spatula out of his body, and left it to cool. The cake was much taller than a loaf of bread. On reflection, I still decided to decorate it. It was too late to grind the icing and I decided to just sprinkle it with powdered sugar.

The cake is cold. Now it remains to cut it. Traditional Easter cakes are baked in round forms and cut into corner sectors. Our cake was square, and I decided that it would still be advisable to cut it into halves, and then into slices, like bread. Despite its splendor and airiness, the cake was cut with a bread knife surprisingly easily.

But after trying, I was disappointed. It was delicious, it was festive, but it was not Easter cake in the form we are all used to. It tasted more like bread. Spicy, sweet, smelling like vanilla, but bread. All my family, raised on real grandmother's cakes, agreed with me. Nevertheless, they ate it in 10 minutes. At the same time, the husband smeared the slices with butter, and the son with orange marmalade.

I felt creepy. First a loaf of bread, then Kulich ... If things go at such a pace, then in a couple of months our apartment will need serious repairs with the expansion of the doorways. We won't make it into ordinary ones. It is not for nothing that slender French women argue that baking is in the mouth for two minutes, and then on the hips all life. This was also confirmed by the scales on which I got up the next morning. Plus 600 grams. And this is a day!

And the awakened family looked at the traditional oatmeal with dislike and demanded bread! But they did not receive bread, however, as well as circuses.

Jam

If the device fell into my hands, then it must be examined to the end. And I decided to make a jam. She chopped a pound of apples, as written in the recipe, poured them into a mold, squeezed half a lemon, and added sugar.

As the recipe says, I shake the mold to mix the ingredients. Having put the form in the bread maker, I selected the program and pressed the "START" button. The cooking time was displayed on the screen: 1 hour 20 minutes. The spatula remained in place, but the apparatus began to heat up. After a few minutes, the spatula turned several times, mixing the contents. After another couple of minutes, it began to rotate constantly. The jam was bubbling, bubbling mixed and boiled with all his might. After the allotted time, the bread maker squeaked and turned off. The sign "END" lit up, the jam was ready. But the temperature was high, and the boiling continued for several more minutes by inertia. Also, boiling in a saucepan that is on an electric stove does not immediately stop.

The jam turned out to be rather liquid, with pieces of apples floating in syrup. I decided that before putting the jam in a vase, it should be allowed to cool slightly. After half an hour, I still laid out the jam using a plastic teflon spoon so as not to scratch the mold.

The uniform had to be washed immediately. But according to the instructions, you cannot wash the form. It is necessary to wipe it with a damp sponge after each use. I did not succeed in wiping off the remaining sugar caramel from the walls. Otherwise, I risked scratching the shape. I had to fill it with water to get wet. After about 15 minutes, the sugar was gone, and I wiped the mold dry.
During this time, the jam cooled down, thickened a little. It is this consistency that is most convenient for smearing it on pancakes, croissants, or just on bread.

I liked the process of making jam, and I decided to fix the material by trying again. This time I took a half-kilogram pack of frozen strawberries that was in the refrigerator. The instructions and the recipe book did not say anything about whether or not you can or cannot make jam from frozen berries. I decided to try it. Without defrosting, I poured the berries into the mold, poured them with lemon juice, and covered them with sugar. She shook it and put it in the bread maker.

The berries boiled almost instantly. The jam turned out to be disastrously liquid, more like juice. There was almost no hope that it would thicken. But there was nothing to do, it only remained to wait for the end of the process. The result was disastrous, it was a complete failure! Even when the jam had cooled down completely, it poured out like syrup. The only thing you could do with it was to top up the tea. But the syrup was very tasty, and the smell of fresh strawberries was wonderfully preserved.

The husband and son did not receive any more bread, here I showed sufficient firmness. But apple jam and strawberry syrup were instantly destroyed at dinner. I didn't force them to weigh themselves, I didn't spoil their mood. But the next day, with a light heart, I took the bread maker to the office. And I firmly decided: this device will never be in our house! We do not need unnecessary temptations!
