 Cucumber is an early dynamic plant, from which it is possible to harvest in the open field without any difficulties, without using film at all. Early varieties and hybrids begin to bear fruit so quickly that they ripen in open ground at the same time as greenhouse ones. In mid-July, with a successfully created plot, you will always receive fruits.
It is obvious that the root system of this plant at the beginning of its development has some critical, irreplaceable phases: if at these moments the root developed poorly, had little space or little nutrition, then this then affects, no matter what good conditions the seedlings would get into.
Requirements.
The only essential requirement for cucumber seedlings is that there is no grass around them. Cucumber bushes have rather weak roots that develop only in warmth. The weed grass, firstly, creates a direct danger: when the weed is pulled out, the roots of the cucumber are torn, and secondly, it does not allow the soil to heat up in the sun, and thirdly, it takes away already little nutrition. Cucumber bushes overgrown with grass do not grow, do not form whips and fruits. But one has only to carefully walk with a hoe, as the landing comes to life.
Cucumbers work well even on heavy clay soils. But since their roots have practically no penetrating power, it is worth making the ground at the surface loose with the help of organic fertilizers: compost or just hay, foliage, shallowly dug in in autumn or early spring.
Pests and diseases.
It is difficult to name any pest or disease that would threaten cucumbers so much that they would question their cultivation. In the case of growing cucumbers on weed-free, moderately fertilized beds, they grow like "grass in a meadow". for this, a rather dense sowing is done in a line every 5-10 cm, so that later not to pay attention to the loss of single plants.
Even such a typical pest as the larva of the sprout fly cannot destroy all the seedlings in a row (although in greenhouses, with repeated cultivation in the same place, this happens) - it will hit the roots of only individual bushes. They are usually affected by diseases, as a rule, deliberately small and weak plants.
Landing.
The planting date can be quite early, the optimal planting time for seedlings for open ground is from May 20 to June 4. Seeds (sprouted or sprouted) can be sown on plots from May 15-20, they are not afraid of frost, being in the ground.
Care and collection.
Growing bushes need moisture in the upper soil layer, frequent watering with warm water is recommended, preferably in the evenings.
The first cucumbers should be picked when they are about the size of a little finger. so that the lashes grow without an "anchor" - they will soon develop and will "churn out" large fruits. On adult plots, cucumbers can be harvested every 2-3 days. The fruit of a cucumber grows quickly: from the ovary to the green leaves of an average (marketable) size, it grows for 7-10 days.
Due to the peculiarities of growth and fruiting, the bush very quickly "processes" all the nutrients from the soil. After the first few weeks of collection, the question of feeding arises. So that fruiting does not slow down the pace, it is sometimes necessary to apply fertilizer to the plots once or twice.
